Where to Keep a Certificate Holder: Frame, Shelf or Drawer

Where does a marriage certificate go once you bring it home? Three answers cover almost everyone: framed on a wall, stood upright on a shelf or desk, or put away in a drawer or cabinet. Each one asks for different dimensions and different conditions. The measured numbers for the certificate and the holder are in certificate holder sizing.
Three directions: framed, standing, stored
| Where | Suits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Framed on a wall | Displaying the date long term | The frame opening must exceed the holder’s outer shell |
| Standing on a shelf or desk | Reaching for it now and then | Avoid long-term sun and anything pressing on it |
| Stored in a drawer or cabinet | Long-term keeping, rarely shown | Cool and dry, away from hard objects |
The three are not exclusive: keep it stored day to day, and stand or frame it when you want to show it or photograph it.
Framing it: how to size the frame
Two numbers, and they are not the same. A Hong Kong marriage certificate measures about 209mm x 298mm as measured, close to A4 at 210 x 297mm but not exactly the same; the outer shell of a MyO! holder is 30.7cm x 22.6cm. A frame goes around the holder, so pick the frame against the outer shell rather than against A4 paper — the two figures differ by roughly two centimetres, and the wrong one will not go in. The measurements and the interior clearance are set out in certificate holder sizing.
Position matters as much as size. A desk side facing a window and a spot inside a hallway are entirely different conditions, and a position in direct sun will fade the cover faster than you would expect.
Standing it on a shelf
Skipping the frame and standing the holder upright on a shelf or a desk is the option that gets in the least way. The hard cover holds its own shape, so it needs no extra support. Two things still matter: do not leave it in prolonged sunlight, and do not let heavy books lean on it for long stretches.
Storing it in a drawer or cabinet
When it is not on display, a drawer or a cabinet is the safest place for it. Three things to do once it is away: put it in a dust bag or a box so it does not rub against hard objects; avoid heavy pressure so the shape holds; and add a desiccant pack in humid months. The general condition is cool and dry and out of direct sunlight, since prolonged sun exposure causes fading.
Holders and frames are two separate things
This one is worth stating plainly: MyO! makes certificate holders, not frames. What you order is a hard-shell holder measuring 30.7cm x 22.6cm; the frame is a separate purchase you make elsewhere, and its material, width and price are not something we supply. If you want both, order the holder first and then pick a frame against the outer shell dimensions above.
Material and where it sits
All 12 combinations share the same interior size, so the material does not constrain where the holder can go — beige linen and blue frosted pearl fit any of the three arrangements. What the material does affect is appearance, feel, and tolerance during care: linen has more room for error, while frosted pearl needs particular care around solvents. For the texture and care differences between the two, see linen vs frosted pearl materials.
Care and storage are two separate jobs
Storing it does not replace caring for it. Wipe the surface with a dry soft cloth, with no cleaning agent needed, and keep water and chemical solvents off it — solvents damage the pearl coating on frosted pearl. The full routine, covering cleaning, storage, moisture control, mould, and minor damage, is in daily care for certificate holders.
Final checks before you put it away
- Measure once: pick a frame against the 30.7cm x 22.6cm outer shell, and confirm your certificate against the measured 209mm x 298mm.
- Keep them separate: we make the holder; the frame is bought separately.
- Choose the spot: avoid long-term direct sun and damp, and bag it, add a desiccant, and keep heavy pressure off it.
- Wipe it regularly: a dry soft cloth, and no solvents.
